welcome back everyone i am raquel and this channel is all about giving career advice and hr tips to help you better navigate the professional world and really make an impact today we are talking all about the new york state withholding form and how to fill that out so you're more than likely here because you just got a new job and you need help completing this form or maybe you're at your current job and you just need help updating the form either way let's get started right now so let me start off by saying that everyone's tax situation is quite different some people are married they're single they have one child they have five kids all of that affects how you complete this form and you want to be sure that you're getting it right that way you're not taking out too much taxes or worse not enough taxes throughout the year so what i would suggest is that you actually talk to a tax professional about your specific situation that way you know that you're getting it right alrighty so this is the new york state employees withholding allowance certificate or if you want to call the it2104 but it's the 2021 form for new york state or if you just want to call it the new york state income tax withholding form you can just do that for this example i'm going to be jane doe the good old jane doe and i'm going to go ahead and enter my address you want to be sure that you are not skipping these fields and that they have your correct information um city we're going to be in new york and our state is new york and then we'll just go ahead and enter a zip code and if you do have an apartment number you want to be sure that you're not skipping over that part as well um you want to be sure very very important that you are not skipping over your social security number um it's not here and sometimes i see a lot of employees miss this box i think it's just the positioning of it but you want to be sure that you're entering your social security number so i'm just going to enter anything for this example next you want to select your filing status whether you are single or head or household you will select here or if you're married or if you're married but you want to withhold your taxes at a higher single rate you can do that as well here if you're married but you're legally separated you can mark an x in the single or head of household box so keep that in mind as well so for the purposes of this example i'm going to be single here um next is going to ask you if you are a resident of new york city or if you're a resident of yonkers so different local taxes also apply when you're completing this form so for the purposes of this example i'm going to go ahead and select that i'm a resident of new york city next you have one and two line items however you want to be sure that you're reading the instructions it says complete the worksheet on page four before making any entries so this is basically saying stop go down to page four so let's scroll down to page four so this is the worksheet that it's talking about so you want to start out with line item six so you're going to enter the number of dependents that you will claim on your state return do not include yourself or if you're married do not include your spouse so for this box we're mostly talking about children or dependent adults so if you take care of your parents or something like that so for the purposes of this example i have two kids so i'm going to select two here next there are different credits that you can claim on your state tax returns so there is the college tuition credit the new york state household credit the real property tax credit so depending on what you know that you're going to claim on your income tax return you would select any of these so for this example i know that i'm going to claim the college tuition credit so i'm going to select one here then there are some additional credits that you can potentially file on your income tax return you want to be sure before you're selecting any of these credits in line seven through nine or any of these that are below 10 through 12 that you know for sure that you're actually going to claim these credits on your tax return you don't want to select something here and then when you file your taxes you already took a credit have less taxes coming out of your check and then now you owe some money at the end of the year so you want to be sure that you're getting it right um so we have the options here on 10 child or dependent care credit 11 earn income credit we have the empire state child credit or the new york city school tax credit so for this example i'm just going to select the child and dependent care credit and keep in mind that most of these credits have income limits and things like that so you want to be sure before you select any of these that you're actually doing your research next on 15 you're going to select if you're a head of household and if you only have one job so because i selected single in the beginning of the form i'm just going to go ahead and leave this blank because i'm not a head of household here um also for lines 16 and 17 there are more tax situations that you could select so you are going to maybe estimate um some federal adjustments to your income for ira contributions or things like that for 16 and 17. also for 18 if you expect to itemize your deductions on your state tax return again you will look into that and see if that situation will apply to you next you're going to add lines 6 through 18 so for this example we have two here one one so we have four we're going to go ahead and add these items and we have four here so we're gonna take this four go back up to our first page and we're going to enter four into box one because that's what we got using the worksheet next if you are a resident of new york city you'll go back to the same worksheet on line four and complete a specific worksheet for new york city workers so you're going to enter on line 29 the amount that she entered in line six and i entered two there then you're gonna add lines 15 through 18 on the worksheet that she just completed for this example i don't have anything so i'm just going to leave that blank and then lines 30 line 31 is asking you to add 29 and 30 so i don't have anything in 30 so i just have two i'm gonna take that two and i'm going to enter that two in line item two on the first page so there i go and that's because i'm in new york city is why i'm going to enter line two if not i would have just left that blank next on lines three four and five you are going to enter additional withholding so if you want additional taxes taken out of your check you have the ability to do that on either line three four or five depending on if you are in the city of new york in the state or if you're in yonker so there might be different situations of why someone might want additional taxes to be taken out of their check and it could be because maybe they owe taxes and they're trying to catch up maybe they earn a high salary and they want to be sure that they're breaking even at the end of the year or maybe their tax professional told them it's best they
