you would like to give us a call here's our phone number 833 288 ewtn that's 833-288-3986 if you're listening to us outside of north america please dial the u.s country code and then 205-271-2985 you can also check out the possibility of sending us an email how do you do that send it to ctc ctc ewtn.com in fact we will get to an email in just a second here charles berry is our producer ryan ryan listen to me matt gabinski is our phone screener and jeff burrson handles social media for us if you want to ask a question via youtube or facebook we are streaming there right now look for the comments box that's where you need to put your question and then jeff will see it he'll send it to us in the studio we're going to try to get that question answered on today's program matches says yeah ryan gabinski that's funny i'm tom price along with dr david anders hey tom how are you i'm good i'm looking forward to the weekend how about you always we had some heavy storms here in birmingham last night very heavy just torrential out where we are and the animals we've got a couple of cats you've got some doggies they were not happy well you know we heard me talk about my most neurotic dog that's smudge and she pants and whines all night and uh and keeps us up but she was pretty good last night actually glad to hear that i'm going to lead off with an email from ireland this is from kratin katrina who says greetings from ireland i really enjoy listening to your show my question is based on a memory of a discussion a number of years ago with my protestant sister-in-law and her husband they had experiencing again this was a couple years ago they had been experiencing signs of demonic activity such as things moving on their own voices seeing things etc i remember at the time asking if they would be worried about the possibility of possession but they said something to the effect of because they were born again and filled with the holy spirit that they could not be possessed what is the catholic view on how we protect ourselves from possession and again that's from katrina in ireland yes thank you very much i appreciate the question so the catholic church's position is that you protect yourself from the demonic by remaining in the state of grace and in the practice of the faith that's how you do it you stay close to the sacraments and to the church and have a life of prayer pursue the life of holiness and by all means avoid the occult and other and other doorways into demonic activity and and when that is the case it is exceedingly rare i mean just vanishingly rare the people who do that have these kinds of problems if you talk to exorcists or you read their memoirs you'll find that most of their which we say clients are people who have wandered far from that life and gotten themselves generally involved in some form of the occult i've seen all right very good well katrina thanks so much for listening to us thanks for checking in from ireland here's an anonymous email we received i know that catholics believe the pope can speak ex cathedra and it is considered infallible when and who made the magisterium infallible ordinary and extraordinary and ecumenical councils that's a great question jesus christ made the magisterium of the church infallible or gave them the charism the gift of infallibility when he founded the church on the rock of saint peter and gave the church the commission to take the gospel to all nations teach everything that he had commanded and that he promised to be with them till the end of the age his promise of divine assistance in the to the church in carrying out that mission and he was very specific about the kind of accompaniment that he would provide to the apostles and their successors whatever they bind on earth would be bound in heaven he said and he gave to to peter specifically the keys of the kingdom of heaven which is a image of executive authority and uh he also gave peter the charge of strengthening the brethren right so uh this is uh this is where the doctrine of papal infallibility and the amount and the magisterium comes from okay it's the institution of the church by christ and the commission that he gave them thanks so much for your email daniel's watching us this afternoon on youtube daniel says why do catholics also call confession reconciliation and what does the church say about how often you should go to confession yeah thanks the reason we also refer to the sacrament as reconciliation is because the sacrament reconciles us to god and to the church and to our neighbor that's what it affects like we alienate ourselves from god through the through sin and we are reconciled to god through the sacrament uh you should go bare minimum bare minimum of once a year if you're conscious of grave sin uh but but the like the prudent thing to do is anytime you're conscious of grave son you should go to confession and uh and it's not a bad idea to have a kind of maintenance checkup if you will uh the u.s conference of catholic bishops i think recommends about monthly there are many souls who prefer to go even on a weekly basis and and it's no it's no index of your sinfulness if you go more frequently it's usually the opposite right pope john paul ii who was an unusual case and this would not be the normal practice for most people went to confession every day and he was the pope he had the weight of the world on his shoulders you want to make sure he was doing everything like he was supposed to do so he examined his conscience and received absolution on a daily basis uh but for most of us you know probably once a month is a is a good rule of thumb bare minimum once a year all right very good thanks so much for your email or for your question there daniel via youtube lisa also watching on youtube today says does the catholic church teach some people such as canonized saints are born with a greater capacity for holiness than the average christian yeah thanks i really appreciate the question so uh you have to be a bit nuanced here the blessed virgin mary was gifted was gifted was graced with uh a if you will a capacity for holiness with actual holiness that was super imminent greater than any other creature and so she is the greatest of all the creatures all the creations of god and the none of the rest of us will get the same measure of grace that came to the

1-833-288-3986 why do I need to confess my sins to a priest what's stopping you this is called to communion with Dr David Anders on the EWTN Global Catholic radio network well what do you know we made it to Friday how about that hey welcome again to call to communion here on EWTN this is the program for our non-catholic brothers and sisters if you've got a question about the Catholic faith hopefully we can get that question answered on today's program my Pro tip for you today is call early because the phone lines on Fridays tend to get very busy not just for this program but for all of our programs and that wouldn't it be nice to get the answer for your question today and then you don't have to wrestle with it all weekend long here's our phone number 833-288 EWTN that's 833-288-3986 if you're listening to us outside of North America please dial the U.S country code and then 205-271-2985 and you can also send us an email if you prefer that CTC at wtn.com is the address CTC ewtn.com Charles Berry is our producer Matt kabinski is our phone screener Jeff Burson handles Social Media for us if you want to ask a question via YouTube or Facebook we're streaming there right now all you have to do is put your question in the comments box Jeff will see it he'll send it to us here in the studio and um we'll take it from there I'm Tom Price along with Dr David Anders Tom how are you today very well you look very nice today my friend uh well uh you don't look so bad yourself Tom I'm I'm trying I'm trying Fridays tend to be a little more casual for me but not for you because you attended a funeral I had to go to a funeral yeah so well very good so here's an interesting question and and I must admit this this really took me by by surprise this is from Bradley in Mansfield Ohio he says I watch and share your show Daily I'm a big fan of your ministry who in the world were Alexander the coppersmith and hymenaeus hymenius and why did Saint Paul the Apostle seem to dislike them so much whenever he mentioned them in his Epistles do any Saints or doctors of the church comment on these characters and who is the best publisher to go to for saintly New Testament commentaries sincerely Bradfield Bradley in Mansfield Ohio yeah thanks I appreciate the question so I have no idea in answer to the first question no idea who these characters were okay and you know there are a lot of these marginal figures that get mentioned in Paul's letters and they're obviously folks that he was associated with some of them friends some of them not friends and he he writes uh to an audience that obviously knows who he's who he's talking about we're not in that audience there may be information on them in eusebius's ecclesiastical history um many of the Legends the story surrounding the apostles and their Associates were passed on into that text okay so you might try that um now who are the most reliable Publishers for commentaries on the New Testament from a Catholic point of view there are two Commentary series that jump to my mind one is the Catholic commentary in sacred scripture which actually is published by a non-catholic publisher I think it's don't get me wrong I think it's Baker okay but it's one of the big Grand Rapids Michigan Evangelical Publishers but they have a Catholic line and it's actually pretty good um Sakura pagina is another one so you might try those okay sounds good here is a question from Marcella who wrote to us yesterday via Facebook we couldn't get to it yesterday so we're gonna do it right now Marcella says I have a question about confession is confession valid if the priest doesn't put on the stole it has happened to me a few times when I have scheduled a specific time for it thanks for all you do and again that's from Marcella yes it's valid so don't worry about it don't worry about it yeah okay very good Marcella thanks so much for your question here's one now from Michelle recently a friend advised me that the Holy Spirit guides each individual in interpreting scripture but does Scripture actually confirm this type of personal relationship with the Holy Spirit or does it confirm that the holy spirit is only promised to guide the church yeah I appreciate the question so there's nothing in scripture or sacred tradition that would suggest that the Indian that the individual has in his relationship to the Holy Spirit a reliable Guide to the interpretation of sacred scripture and in fact the entire Catholic tradition mitigates against that conclusion teaching that you cannot properly interpret scripture if you do not do so with the mind of the church so there is an objective Criterium for proper interpretation and it is it is ecclesiastical tradition and the magisterium and there are also some very specific principles about interpretation namely the the four senses of scripture and the relationship of the covenants and the Testaments and so forth all of that comes into play and so scripture interpretation is um it's it's kind of one of these you know please do not try this at home kind of thanks right I mean and and it doesn't mean you can't read the Bible on your own and you can be moved by it to acts of Charity or faith or hope but uh when you when you start pronouncing on well this is what this means in a kind of dogmatic way you can get yourself into a lot of trouble if you step outside the bounds of Catholic tradition and uh the the annals of History are replete with Souls who were absolutely sure that they had read scripture rightly sometimes they think for the very first time and they come up with all kinds of innovative stuff that that breaks them outside of Christian Orthodoxy and part of the problem I think is that many people approach the Bible not understanding what it is and they say well I think the Bible's the word of God well great so do we Catholics also think it's the word of God that's not what I mean that's not enough right it's inspired okay it's inspired we also agree but what's its function what's its purpose and some people approach the Bible treating it as if it were a kind of comprehensive manual user's manual on the Christian Life or a theology textbook Systematic Theology textbook and so they go to the text of the Bible saying well you know I want to know what God has to say on such and such a topic and they sort of go to the index or the or the concordance and they pull out all the references think oh well that's a systematic answer that's not the way you do it that's treating the Bible as if it were a textbook or an encyclopedia or something it's actually a much more nuanced text that informs our life of liturgy and prayer and moral reflection to unite us to Christ but the ways in which you do that does that are more Dynamic and mysterious and nuanced than that sort of fundamentalist way would pre-spose yes indeed Michelle thanks so much for your email if you would like to send us an email for a future show the address is CTC ewtn.com CTC ewtn.com we try to tackle a couple of emails on each of our live shows and then once a month or so we'll do a mailbag program answer a whole parcel of questions in a few moments we're goi
