i just got something in the mail it's kind of interesting so i recently applied for an llc i paid my dues to the secretary of state and i got my receipt on the same day in another envelope i got something from the idaho certificate service and they want me to fill out a certificate of existence form which i don't know what that was at the time all i know is they wanted to check for 73.50 so i could get a certificate for something that i'm pretty sure already existed going over the form the last straw for me was the email domain it was a dot com not a dot gov so they're clearly a private business with no ties to the government they're just doing some sort of bureaucratic gymnastics i think to try and seem like a legitimate filing agency the scummy part about this is that there's probably a lot of people who do send that check this arrived the same day as my receipt from the secretary of state and even has a little fake due date on the form probably to rush you so you don't take any time to do extra research to make sure that it's legit not gonna lie it almost got me but thanks to going on google and just looking it up to make sure i saw some better business bureau complaints and stuff like that and i quickly found out that it is just a scam also just for fun i decided to go to the website associated with their email and you get a forbidden error which is yeah that's really official so if it didn't seem like enough of a scam already they don't even have a working website and since we're on the subject of investigation i decided to look up the address that i was supposed to send this check to and it goes to the postal annex in boise it looks like it goes into maybe some sort of po box or something or whatever the postal annex's version of a po box is it just happens to be very convenient that the postal annex is located on a street called federal away because that really does kind of give it some extra subconscious credibility and i can see a lot of people uh falling for it just by seeing that and thinking that oh federal must be some government building and finally i noticed on the forum there is a phone number that you can call which is interesting i just want to see what they have to say so here's the video i got two seven three eight all right hello thank you for calling certificate services your company are you calling on behalf of them i'm just gonna skip ahead because it took me a couple seconds they wanted my company name and i told them no so then i asked them what the certificate of existence actually was about and here's their explanation yeah same thing okay our certificate of good standing yeah it's a certificate it's issued by the secretary of state and it's physical proof that your company is current and legally allowed to do business in the state um it may be asked of you at a bank they'll ask for this certificate if you're opening up a business account or if you're opening up apply for a business loan or certificates different business license in your city okay um and so a certificate of existence is necessary to operate as a business no it's not no it's not necessary okay um and is it is it necessary to run it as to open a bank account or is it just can be used you can open up a business bank account but some banks ask ask you for this certificate of status in order to do so some don't some do okay so yeah the certificate of existence thing is pretty clearly a scam you don't really need it to do anything i'm in the process of opening a business banking account they haven't mentioned one thing about a certificate of existence there's no reason for this to exist they are just trying to capitalize off of confusion i don't know how this operation hasn't been shut down yet maybe they just create a new business every single time they get caught and they're just kind of like a fly-by-night scam operation or something like that they're just trying to get free money from people who are confused so there it is the certificate of existence scam so the moral of the video even if something looks legit it never hurts to do a little bit of research look up the phone number look up the website we have all these tools to help avoid scams never hurts to do a little bit of research so anyways thanks for watching and stay safe
